Five Things Friday

1. The pool is up!! Finally summertime is here!! I floated for a little bit yesterday, and it was wonderful. What I've been waiting for...

2. New yummy protein shake recipe(got the idea from Kate at BeyondFit Physiques!): Blend a scoop of chocolate protein, 1 tbsp sugar free butterscotch pudding, 1 spoon cocoa, and 3/4-1 cup almond milk-tastes like brownie batter!

3. Some good internet finds:
4. My workouts this week: http://lindsaystraininglog.blogspot.com/ I'm taking a deload week next week and then starting a new training plan.
 5. Current obsession: watermelon! I was craving it over weekend, so I had to go out and buy one! Hit the spot.

And while we're on the subject of food....I'm liking this higher carb thing. I think I'll stick with it for a while!. ;) I’ve enjoyed being able to eat carbs with dinner and not worrying about it making me "fat". I enjoyed grilling out with my husband the other day and having a potato and some watermelon-something that I wouldn't have let myself do a year ago!

My diet philosophy now is this: to eat what I want to eat, when I want to eat it! Mostly healthy, natural foods of course, and foods that I enjoy, but without being obsessive or thinking about food 24/7 as I have done in the past.  I'm not quite there yet, but I'm getting there... I'm trying to really listen to my body, to eat when I'm hungry and eat what I want to eat, not what I'm "supposed" to eat at a certain time or whatever. I don't ever want to have to "diet" or restrict myself from certain foods. That's just not how I want to live, even if that means I have to give up having abs.
Yes, I will always be aware of what I’m eating and watch my portion sizes. You just can't go all crazy if you want to maintain a certain amount of leanness, but one thing I do know is that I don’t want to obsessively track what I eat down to every single gram and calorie. I want to be able to eat a potato or some corn on the cob or have a bun on my burger for dinner if I want! I’m over having 6 pack abs. I would much rather have a little more body fat and be able to be sane and not obsess over my nutrition. Plus, I’d rather look big and muscular and STRONG than puny with ripped abs. But hey, that's just me.
I may not have abs, but you gotta love how carbs make your muscles fuller and your veins pop!

Have a great weekend everyone! Lift some heavy weights, soak in some vitamin D, and have a yummy treat(or two)! :)

People always said That time would heal the pain But how can that be When mine still remains? The tears still fall At just the thought of you So I know that what they say Just can't be true As the years go by I miss you so much still  No matter how much time passes I know I always will How are you not here To ease my hurting heart? Never could I have imagined We would ever be apart My world has been shattered A piece of me is gone And all I can do is pray For strength to live on I know that one day soon I will see you again I just have to try to suffer through And make it until then

Putting My Heart Out There

Hey guys. Here's where we're at right now: Matt finished his radiation treatments last week. Did they help? I don't know. He's sleeping a lot more. Having trouble chewing and swallowing. Not eating much. Not talking much, at least not in full sentences. It's just been a slow, steady decline for the last few months. I think it was really too late for radiation....But who knows, maybe it is delaying things. We went in last Tuesday for his infusion and talked with his neuro-oncologist about everything that we've been seeing with Matt, and he decided that we're at the point now where we should discontinue treatments...I feel like it's the right decision, even though it breaks my heart knowing that there is nothing else we can do. But I feel like we've done everything. All the supplements, the diet, the chemo, the radiation... Matt has fought hard. He never gave up hope. He kept the faith. He never complained through any of this. Not once did I hea...

One Year...

One year ago today... the day it all changed. It was a Tuesday. I got the call from Matt around 3:00. I remember I was sitting at the computer at home. Matt told me that he was at the hospital, and that Bob Scott, his boss, had driven him there. Then he said those 4 words I never expected to hear: “The tumor came back.”  My heart stopped. Matt had gone in that morning for an MRI, as he has done numerous times in the past 10 years. He was now at the point where he had an MRI just yearly now, and that one was done in February, which showed that everything was fine. There was no sign of tumor growth, which had been the case for the last 10 years, praise God. But because Matt had been having some seizure activity for the last few months, they suggested he go in for another MRI in July. We then decided we should move up the appointment, because he had been having a headache every day for the past week. Good thing we did.... After I hung up with Matt,  I immediately brok...
