Life Lately

Hey guys! It's been a while, so I thought I'd give an update on how things have been going.

Matt has been doing physical therapy three days a week with someone who comes to the house. He has good days and bad days, but overall, he has been progressing now that he's moving more. He's still not able to walk, but he did take a few steps with the walker with the therapist a couple of days last week, which is major progress. I know he still gets super frustrated with the things he can't do, but hopefully he'll continue to improve and keep his spirits up!

They actually recommended going to Frazier for in-patient rehab, so we plan on doing that starting Tuesday next week as long as we get insurance approval. He'll stay for a couple of weeks and get intense therapy multiple times a day, which they think will be extremely beneficial for him, moreso than what they can do with him here at the house.

He's still doing his Avastin infusions every other week, but his neurooncologist decided to hold off on doing the CCNU for the moment just because of everything else Matt is dealing with as far as the Parkinsonism. He did, however, start him on a low dose of steroids to see if that would help some with his energy and strength. He's still on the keto diet(with the exception for pizza every few weeks!), and still doing all his supplements and oils-anything we can throw at this beast!

Matt had an old friend fly up from Florida a couple of weeks ago that he hadn't seen in over 10 years, so that was really good for him. They watched lots of old videos from when they played football together in  high school, laughed a lot, and of course, had to get out for some pizza!

Matt's parents are staying with us to help out. Thank God for them, because we would need hired help if it was just me. So thankful for them!

Last weekend I went ice skating with Mindy and Celeste. It was lots of fun and nice to just get out of the house. Plus, seeing Celeste always makes me happy!
Asher has been doing good lately. No more trips to the animal hospital, thank Jesus!  He's on lots of meds and sometimes limps a little because of his bad knee, but I guess that's just part of being old! I'm just so happy he's better. I do think he's a little anxious though because he knows something is up with Matt and that things aren't normal, so sometimes he acts a little weird and whines when we're transferring Matt to his chair and things like that, but overall, he's good. Still as spoiled rotten as ever!
Well, in workout news, I've still been getting my workouts in at the gym, usually between clients or before my sessions start for the day. My programming has been kind of all over the place, but I recently have changed to 3 days of lower body and one day of upper. So one day is just a light glute workout, one day is a heavy day, and one day is a lighter leg day. I'm liking it so far. I'm not training for strength really, but I do feel like my strength is still there even though I'm not trying to hit PRs all the time. That just takes too much thought and effort, and I don't have time for that right now. I'll probably take a rest week next week when Matt's at rehab and then just get in some bodyweight workouts when I can. I've been trying to be a lot better about being consistent with higher calories, at least on workout days, but so far I've not gained much....

Well, that's all for now! Keep us in your prayers!

People always said That time would heal the pain But how can that be When mine still remains? The tears still fall At just the thought of you So I know that what they say Just can't be true As the years go by I miss you so much still  No matter how much time passes I know I always will How are you not here To ease my hurting heart? Never could I have imagined We would ever be apart My world has been shattered A piece of me is gone And all I can do is pray For strength to live on I know that one day soon I will see you again I just have to try to suffer through And make it until then

Putting My Heart Out There

Hey guys. Here's where we're at right now: Matt finished his radiation treatments last week. Did they help? I don't know. He's sleeping a lot more. Having trouble chewing and swallowing. Not eating much. Not talking much, at least not in full sentences. It's just been a slow, steady decline for the last few months. I think it was really too late for radiation....But who knows, maybe it is delaying things. We went in last Tuesday for his infusion and talked with his neuro-oncologist about everything that we've been seeing with Matt, and he decided that we're at the point now where we should discontinue treatments...I feel like it's the right decision, even though it breaks my heart knowing that there is nothing else we can do. But I feel like we've done everything. All the supplements, the diet, the chemo, the radiation... Matt has fought hard. He never gave up hope. He kept the faith. He never complained through any of this. Not once did I hea...

Why?

Why? Why do I care so much?  Why do I make sure they brush their teeth at night so that they don't get cavities? Why do I spend my own money to buy them clothes, toys and decorate their rooms, among other things?  Why do I do 5,000 loads of laundry a week to make sure they have clothes to wear to school? Why do I make sure they go to church on Sundays so that they'll be raised to know about Jesus? Why do I try to give them chores and responsibilities so that they will turn out to be decent human beings? Why do I read them a bedtime story at night, even when I'm exhausted? Why do I clean up after them constantly and cook for them and try to always have healthy snacks and food on hand? Why do I go to their sports games and practices, just to feel like the odd man out standing there awkwardly with their bio mom? Why do I give 100% of myself and make so many sacrifices for children I didn't birth? Only to be insulted and told hurtful things? To be made to feel like I'm ...
