Should I Stop Eating Grains???

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/why-grains-are-unhealthy/

I've been reading more and more lately about grains being bad for us and about the paleo diet, which is a grain and dairy free diet. I'm the type of person that when I hear that something is bad for me, I don't want to keep eating it! I've read some things that say grains are unhealthy, I've read other things that say we need grains...so I don't know what to believe!!

I do think that most everyone would benefit from cutting WAY back on the amount of grains they consume and eating more veggies and protein instead. We would all be a lot leaner and healthier.

But eliminating them completely?? That's pretty tough. I just don't know what else I would eat! What would I eat in place of the grains to get the same amount of calories? I don't want to lose weight...and I feel like I'm eating enough meat and fat already. I could increase my veggies... but getting in the 3 servings a day that I'm eating now is hard enough.

I have really cut back on my grains-I used to eat some type of grain every few hours-cereal, bread, rice...Now I only eat them at breakfast and after a workout when my body really needs them the most. So I guess I'll just stick with doing that for now...I just can't deal with never being able to eat bread or cereal!!!

  1. Here's the secret about eating grains, sprout them! When grains sprout they turn into a vegetable. Weird, huh? I sprout oat groats and they taste just the same if not better than steel cut oats. Also, quinoa sprouts very easily and tastes great sprouted. The cool thing is that you don't even have to cook them, just sprout and add to salads, your sprouted oat groats or mix them in with some of your cooked veggies after they're done cooking. Yum! Here's a link to a sprouting guide: http://www.sproutamo.com/start.htm

  2. First off, I am going to need the name of that restaurant where you got the awesome desert in a recent post! YUM! That looks soooo good!

Second, I love that shirt about all the medicine. I swear I have heard all that and more working in the ER. A pill for everything so they can do nothing to improve their own health. So sad.

I am with you, I dont think I can give up grains. You have the best plan now: in the am and post workout. I love oatmeal. That is the thing I wouldnt want to let go. Most other grains and starches could leave, but oatmeal...NO! :)

  3. Krissa-the dessert was from Buckhead's. It was sooooo yummy. I love anything with chocolate and peanut butter!

I'm not big on oats, but I just love my Ezekiel toast and Kashi cereal!

  4. Ezekiel toast is a great product! Because it's sprouted it's easier to digest. Go ahead, eat it, I won't tell : )

Putting My Heart Out There

Hey guys. Here's where we're at right now: Matt finished his radiation treatments last week. Did they help? I don't know. He's sleeping a lot more. Having trouble chewing and swallowing. Not eating much. Not talking much, at least not in full sentences. It's just been a slow, steady decline for the last few months. I think it was really too late for radiation....But who knows, maybe it is delaying things. We went in last Tuesday for his infusion and talked with his neuro-oncologist about everything that we've been seeing with Matt, and he decided that we're at the point now where we should discontinue treatments...I feel like it's the right decision, even though it breaks my heart knowing that there is nothing else we can do. But I feel like we've done everything. All the supplements, the diet, the chemo, the radiation... Matt has fought hard. He never gave up hope. He kept the faith. He never complained through any of this. Not once did I hea
People always said That time would heal the pain But how can that be When mine still remains? The tears still fall At just the thought of you So I know that what they say Just can't be true As the years go by I miss you so much still  No matter how much time passes I know I always will How are you not here To ease my hurting heart? Never could I have imagined We would ever be apart My world has been shattered A piece of me is gone And all I can do is pray For strength to live on I know that one day soon I will see you again I just have to try to suffer through And make it until then

One Year...

One year ago today... the day it all changed. It was a Tuesday. I got the call from Matt around 3:00. I remember I was sitting at the computer at home. Matt told me that he was at the hospital, and that Bob Scott, his boss, had driven him there. Then he said those 4 words I never expected to hear: “The tumor came back.”  My heart stopped. Matt had gone in that morning for an MRI, as he has done numerous times in the past 10 years. He was now at the point where he had an MRI just yearly now, and that one was done in February, which showed that everything was fine. There was no sign of tumor growth, which had been the case for the last 10 years, praise God. But because Matt had been having some seizure activity for the last few months, they suggested he go in for another MRI in July. We then decided we should move up the appointment, because he had been having a headache every day for the past week. Good thing we did.... After I hung up with Matt,  I immediately broke down. I
