Pistols: My Nemesis!

On the schedule for today's lower body workout was good ol' pistol squats.
UGH. Pistols are one of those exercises that I've just never been able to do for reps. They don't feel good, and I just absolutely HATE doing them. I've done them a few times in CrossFit workouts, but it was always alternating legs, not one at a time. I figured that I'd be able to do them today(I mean, even though I never do them, why not?)...but boy, was I in a for a surprise. I just could NOT do them. I tried different variations and progressions, but they all sucked. It was so frustrating and not fun at all!  Stupid pistols.

Yeah, yeah, I know....I could practice and work up to getting better at them, but honestly, I just don't want to! So I'm just going to be a wuss and swap them out for a different exercise. Because I hate them THAT much. And yes, I do like to do things that are challenging and out of my comfort zone to a certain extent...but not this time. I don't want to dread my leg days just because I know that I have to do pistols, when really, I don't HAVE to do them! You can't make me! :-P Can any of you do pistols really well (if so, I hate you!)? Are they something that took you a while to learn?

I also decided not to do deadlifts this week because my back has been super tight and sore for the past week, so I did barbell hip thrusts instead.  Hopefully I'll be better next week, but I'm going to listen to my body and not be stupid and try to push through it. I definitely don't want to have the same issue that I had last year when I couldn't squat or deadlift for months due to hip and back issues!

Is there any exercise that you absolutely HATE and have no desire to get better at?

  1. I love compound exercises, but I have to say I have ne desire to improve on the Incline Barbell Bench Press. For some reason I hate that exercise!!

    1. Barbell presses aren't my favorite thing either, but I love dumbbell chest presses!

  2. I've never done a pistol because I probably can't, I'm so inflexible. That I need to work on. But I also read they don't activate that many muscles as opposed to other exercise, so I'll justify not doing them. ;)

    1. I think a big part of it is mobility issues with me, too. I do think there are better exercises I can do, so I don't feel bad not doing them. ;)

  3. You know how I feel about listening to your body! It's hard to do sometimes, but SO very important. :)

    1. Yup, I'm getting better at it, but it's so hard for me not to just push through because I want to stick to my plan!

  4. When people hate on bodyweight training, I tell them to just TRY doing a pistol - that usually shuts them up pretty quickly! I can't do full pistols. I either do them to a bench (but I find it difficult to maintain tension and come back up) or hold on to a TRX for balance. The first few times you do them after a hiatus are going to be painful. I had serious cramping going on!

    1. I actually like doing them to a bench, but I never considered those pistols...maybe I'll just stick to doing those!

  5. I hate them just as much as you! I'm also sure that I look absolutely ridiculous doing them. What are you planning to swap them out for? I'm curious - I've never figured out a good substitute!

    1. I was SO mad at how hard they were and how stupid I looked "trying" to do them! I will either do them to a bench or just do Bulgarian split squats with heavy dumbbells since I haven't done those in a while.

    2. I love Bulgarian split squats! Great idea! I love doing them while holding large weight plates - makes me feel good and tough. :)

  6. For me, it's running. I know I have the cardio and endurance but knowing I need to condition my legs for running... ugh!! I want to run for really long and I can but my legs are in sooo much pain afterwards. I guess I just don't love it that much to have the patience to properly run. I guess I'll just stick with my beloved bike!

    1. I'm not a fan of running at all! I HATE it. Try sprinting or jumping rope!

Putting My Heart Out There

Hey guys. Here's where we're at right now: Matt finished his radiation treatments last week. Did they help? I don't know. He's sleeping a lot more. Having trouble chewing and swallowing. Not eating much. Not talking much, at least not in full sentences. It's just been a slow, steady decline for the last few months. I think it was really too late for radiation....But who knows, maybe it is delaying things. We went in last Tuesday for his infusion and talked with his neuro-oncologist about everything that we've been seeing with Matt, and he decided that we're at the point now where we should discontinue treatments...I feel like it's the right decision, even though it breaks my heart knowing that there is nothing else we can do. But I feel like we've done everything. All the supplements, the diet, the chemo, the radiation... Matt has fought hard. He never gave up hope. He kept the faith. He never complained through any of this. Not once did I hea
People always said That time would heal the pain But how can that be When mine still remains? The tears still fall At just the thought of you So I know that what they say Just can't be true As the years go by I miss you so much still  No matter how much time passes I know I always will How are you not here To ease my hurting heart? Never could I have imagined We would ever be apart My world has been shattered A piece of me is gone And all I can do is pray For strength to live on I know that one day soon I will see you again I just have to try to suffer through And make it until then

Why?

Why? Why do I care so much?  Why do I make sure they brush their teeth at night so that they don't get cavities? Why do I spend my own money to buy them clothes, toys and decorate their rooms, among other things?  Why do I do 5,000 loads of laundry a week to make sure they have clothes to wear to school? Why do I make sure they go to church on Sundays so that they'll be raised to know about Jesus? Why do I try to give them chores and responsibilities so that they will turn out to be decent human beings? Why do I read them a bedtime story at night, even when I'm exhausted? Why do I clean up after them constantly and cook for them and try to always have healthy snacks and food on hand? Why do I go to their sports games and practices, just to feel like the odd man out standing there awkwardly with their bio mom? Why do I give 100% of myself and make so many sacrifices for children I didn't birth? Only to be insulted and told hurtful things? To be made to feel like I'm
