Pray More, Worry Less-Try It!

I went through a phase a while back where I was experiencing anxiety-some of it was due to obsessing over my training and nutrition and worrying about my family, but also sometimes it seemed like there was no reason for it. It was just like a constant nagging sense of anxiety in the back of my head, even when I didn't feel like I was worried or stressed about anything.

I can say now that that feeling has greatly diminished, one of the reasons being that I began to pray more.

I have always prayed, but usually it was just at night as I was going to sleep. And honestly, most of the time, I'd fall asleep before I finished! But for the past year or so I have really made much more concentrated effort to fix my thoughts on God, to spend more time in His Word, and to pray frequently throughout the day-all day. And it has really made a huge difference.

People so often have a tendency to just pray when something bad happens, or when they need something, like God is there to just answer  their every beck and call. But the things is, that is not how a relationship with God should be. Think about how you would feel if there was someone in your life who always came to you when they needed something, but never wanted to spend time or talk with you. I know that I wouldn't like that very much!

The thing is, you can and should talk to God anytime, like you would your closest friend. He wants you to give your worries and cares to Him- He really does want the best for you! When you know God and how much He loves you, when you truly believe that, it makes all the difference. It really does help you not to worry so much when you know and believe in the goodness and faithfulness of God. But if you don't believe that God is on your side, or you doubt that He is even listening or that prayer even makes a difference, of course you're not going to want to pray.

It may be hard at first to know how to pray, or what to pray. But you can just start with a few minutes every morning. Simply thank Him for giving you another day to live. Ask that He will lead you and guide you through the day.

As you drive to work in the morning, think about all that He has blessed you with and thank Him for it. Thank Him for His mercy and His grace, for sending His son to die for you so that you can know Him and have REAL life!

If you struggle with worry and anxiety, ask Him for peace. Ask that He will help you to find joy in Him, to be content with what you have, and to help you not to worry about things that won't matter in the long run. When you find yourself worrying about something, give it up to Him.

Then, start praying for others. I think that when we are only focused on ourselves and all of our problems all of the time, it just intensifies our stress and anxiety and unhappiness even more. Yes, pray for yourself and your needs, but also pray for your family members and friends daily. Shift your focus from yourself  to how you can help and love others.

"Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere." -Ephesians 6:18

God wants you to know true peace, and that peace is found only in drawing near to Him and having a close relationship with Him. The more time you spend reading God's Word, the more you know of Him, the more you will want to talk to Him.

You can't develop a relationship without communication, right? Well, that's one of the ways that we develop our relationship with God. You don't have to worry about praying the "right" way, or saying the right things, or spending 2 hours a day praying. No, prayer is just sharing your heart with God and talking with Him all throughout the day.

Try it!

"So when anxiety knocks at the door of your heart, let prayer answer. Not just a general prayer or only a venting prayer, but one with adoration, petition, with thanksgiving and specific requests. God wants to comfort you and give you His peace, and He wants to help you with the problems that you can’t solve on your own."

  1. i always think of my relationship with God how you described. To not just take from him. Ask him for help, but to thank him every single day, too! It makes all the difference! Thanks Lindsay for a beautiful post

  2. I remember when I was in college, being away from husband(then fiancé)I had transferred schools(out of state) mid way and there was a lot of pressure on me to keep my athletic and academic scholarships. I HAD to make the grades and I HAD to perform to the best of my athletic capabilities every day. I can honestly say the type of prayers you mention is what kept me sane during that time!
that and trying to shift focus off myself and on to others. when you are in the service of others, you are doing the service of the lord. I cant tell how many times I tried to be of service any way I could, whether it was helping little old ladies unload their groceries, putting away stray grocery carts in the parking lot, opening doors for others, making a care package for sick teammates or dorm mates, volunteering to be a Sunday school teacher for the youth group...by praying more and focusing on others, the stress that was placed on me felt smaller or more manageable! I made it through those last 2 years of school with the best running seasons of my life, making it all the way to Nationals AND walking away with a 4.0 gpa
    prayer works!!!!!!!
    great post!

Putting My Heart Out There

Hey guys. Here's where we're at right now: Matt finished his radiation treatments last week. Did they help? I don't know. He's sleeping a lot more. Having trouble chewing and swallowing. Not eating much. Not talking much, at least not in full sentences. It's just been a slow, steady decline for the last few months. I think it was really too late for radiation....But who knows, maybe it is delaying things. We went in last Tuesday for his infusion and talked with his neuro-oncologist about everything that we've been seeing with Matt, and he decided that we're at the point now where we should discontinue treatments...I feel like it's the right decision, even though it breaks my heart knowing that there is nothing else we can do. But I feel like we've done everything. All the supplements, the diet, the chemo, the radiation... Matt has fought hard. He never gave up hope. He kept the faith. He never complained through any of this. Not once did I hea
People always said That time would heal the pain But how can that be When mine still remains? The tears still fall At just the thought of you So I know that what they say Just can't be true As the years go by I miss you so much still  No matter how much time passes I know I always will How are you not here To ease my hurting heart? Never could I have imagined We would ever be apart My world has been shattered A piece of me is gone And all I can do is pray For strength to live on I know that one day soon I will see you again I just have to try to suffer through And make it until then

Why?

Why? Why do I care so much?  Why do I make sure they brush their teeth at night so that they don't get cavities? Why do I spend my own money to buy them clothes, toys and decorate their rooms, among other things?  Why do I do 5,000 loads of laundry a week to make sure they have clothes to wear to school? Why do I make sure they go to church on Sundays so that they'll be raised to know about Jesus? Why do I try to give them chores and responsibilities so that they will turn out to be decent human beings? Why do I read them a bedtime story at night, even when I'm exhausted? Why do I clean up after them constantly and cook for them and try to always have healthy snacks and food on hand? Why do I go to their sports games and practices, just to feel like the odd man out standing there awkwardly with their bio mom? Why do I give 100% of myself and make so many sacrifices for children I didn't birth? Only to be insulted and told hurtful things? To be made to feel like I'm
