A Letter To My Niece

To the little girl who changed our world.

Dear Celeste,
You had my heart from the very first moment I heard yours beat.

I will forever remember the moment Mindy called me and told me she was pregnant. I will forever remember hearing your heart beat for the first time. I will forever remember being at the ultrasound when we found out you were a baby girl. I will forever remember the moment you entered the world and Dr. Watkins had me cut the umbilical cord.

From the moment you were born, I was in love. Absolutely head over heels. I couldn't get over how cute you were, even as a newborn! I had my camera ready that first day of your life, and I haven't stopped snapping pictures of you since. I'm not even ashamed to admit that I may have a bit of a problem when it comes to the picture taking, and I'm sure you are getting tired of the camera being in your face all the time. Over three years later, I still just can't get enough of your cuteness. I just can't.

You have brought so much joy and happiness to me and to our family. I truly believe that  you were an answered prayer. You brought my sister back. You brought back the joy and the light to her eyes. You brought back the Mindy that had been lost for so long. I thank God for that and for you every single day. Our family has become so much closer, all because of a little baby girl.

I never knew that I could love a human being so much. Even just thinking about you sometimes brings tears to my eyes. I even wonder sometimes, "Is this normal??" I don't understand how can a tiny human person have this kind of effect on me! I get so excited to see a picture or video of you on Facebook or Snapchat, and it makes me entire day when your mom sends me a voice text or video from you. I listen to it over and over and over again! I love your cute little voice, your big blue eyes, your smile, your laugh. Hearing you call me "Aunt Lindsay" and saying that you'll miss me when you say goodbye completely melts my heart! You have me wrapped around your finger...and I'm totally fine with it.

My prayer is that we will continue to have a close relationship as you grow older. I wish you could stay little forever, but I'm excited to watch you grow up, to go to your sporting events, to watch your graduate, to see you grow into a woman. I wish I could shield you from all the evil of this world and protect you from anything bad ever happening to you, but I know that I can't. But I can pray. And I can be there for you.

I hope that you'll turn to me if you ever need to talk or ask for advice. Just know that I'll be there if you need me. Just know that you have someone who has been praying over you since the very first day you were born, and I will continue to pray for you for the rest of your life. I pray that God will keep his hand on your life, that He will protect you, that He'll lead you and guide you, and that you will make the choice to follow Him.

I love you so much Celeste Faith, and I'm so lucky to be your aunt.

Love,
Aunt Lindsay

Putting My Heart Out There

Hey guys. Here's where we're at right now: Matt finished his radiation treatments last week. Did they help? I don't know. He's sleeping a lot more. Having trouble chewing and swallowing. Not eating much. Not talking much, at least not in full sentences. It's just been a slow, steady decline for the last few months. I think it was really too late for radiation....But who knows, maybe it is delaying things. We went in last Tuesday for his infusion and talked with his neuro-oncologist about everything that we've been seeing with Matt, and he decided that we're at the point now where we should discontinue treatments...I feel like it's the right decision, even though it breaks my heart knowing that there is nothing else we can do. But I feel like we've done everything. All the supplements, the diet, the chemo, the radiation... Matt has fought hard. He never gave up hope. He kept the faith. He never complained through any of this. Not once did I hea
People always said That time would heal the pain But how can that be When mine still remains? The tears still fall At just the thought of you So I know that what they say Just can't be true As the years go by I miss you so much still  No matter how much time passes I know I always will How are you not here To ease my hurting heart? Never could I have imagined We would ever be apart My world has been shattered A piece of me is gone And all I can do is pray For strength to live on I know that one day soon I will see you again I just have to try to suffer through And make it until then

Why?

Why? Why do I care so much?  Why do I make sure they brush their teeth at night so that they don't get cavities? Why do I spend my own money to buy them clothes, toys and decorate their rooms, among other things?  Why do I do 5,000 loads of laundry a week to make sure they have clothes to wear to school? Why do I make sure they go to church on Sundays so that they'll be raised to know about Jesus? Why do I try to give them chores and responsibilities so that they will turn out to be decent human beings? Why do I read them a bedtime story at night, even when I'm exhausted? Why do I clean up after them constantly and cook for them and try to always have healthy snacks and food on hand? Why do I go to their sports games and practices, just to feel like the odd man out standing there awkwardly with their bio mom? Why do I give 100% of myself and make so many sacrifices for children I didn't birth? Only to be insulted and told hurtful things? To be made to feel like I'm
