Should I Compete?

I've been thinking lately about the possibility of competing...

in a powerlifting competition, that is!

I have people always telling me to do a figure competition, but.... that is just not my thing. The unhealthy obsession with outer appearance, getting extremely lean, and having my world revolving around macros and Tupperware-thanks, but no thanks.

But I am very competitive, even if it's just with myself, and I've always thought it would be fun to do a powerlifting competition one day! The other day I just got to thinking about it and was like, 'what am I waiting for? What better time than now?'

So I am seriously considering doing one later this year...I just don't know where to even start-how to pick a coach, how to pick a competition? I guess hiring a coach to program my workouts and assess my lifts would be the first thing, and then maybe they can help me pick a meet.

But... I am afraid that I'll chicken out and end up not going through with it. I'm already finding myself making excuses. Like it'll be too expensive... and I'm not even that strong.... and I'm going to embarrass myself. People are gonna be like, who is this little girl who thinks she can be a powerlifter?

I know those are stupid thoughts. Because this is really about doing something that scares me, something that I've never done before. And also more about the training and just seeing how strong I can get.

"When was the last time you were scared to do something?
Similarly, when was the last time you were truly out of your comfort zone? Doing something you weren't even sure was sane or right? If you can't remember, I can tell you one thing – you're stagnant. If you're not consistently scared and uncomfortable, you're not making progress. Period."
-Mike Robertson

It's not about competing against anyone else but myself, because I definitely won't be setting any world records! It's just about the process and being able to say that I did it! And I think it would be fun training just purely for strength, which I really have never actually committed to before.

So....should I do it??

  1. Hi! DO IT!!!!! You will be amazing. I competed in my first powerlifting meet this past February and am training for a 2nd one in September! It truly is the most empowering, challenging, incredible experience! I have only been "lifting heavy" for a year so it was all so new!! It was the most of out my comfort zone experience ever and it has given me such confidence and mental gains as a result. It has helped me understand that competing against myself is all that matters. Anyway, enough about me-I am so inspired by you, Lindsay and seeing you give powerlifting a go would be so motivating and it is great to have a goal to work towards too. If you ever want to talk any further about it all I would love to chat :) Have a wonderful weekend.

  2. Hi Mollie! That's awesome!
I guess I do have some questions as far as how to pick a meet, and if I should hire someone local or an online coach...which route did you go? And did you have your coach there with you at the meet? I'm so nervous about the whole thing...but I don't want that to stop me. Like you said, I think it would really be an empowering experience!
    Thank you! :)

  3. You have to do it! A) so you can turn that ugly stereotype of powerlifters being big and fat on its head B) because you ARE strong and C) because competing is so much fun!

  6. Lindsay....I say go for it. In my [short] life experience, I have lately realized that if I'm unsure whether I should do something or not, sometimes I'll just step out in faith that that's the direction I'm supposed to be taking. If it's not...God usually has a way of rerouting us ;) and there will ALWAYS be nagging doubts in your mind, but overcoming them is just another addition to your testimony if/when you meet this goal! <3

Putting My Heart Out There

Hey guys. Here's where we're at right now: Matt finished his radiation treatments last week. Did they help? I don't know. He's sleeping a lot more. Having trouble chewing and swallowing. Not eating much. Not talking much, at least not in full sentences. It's just been a slow, steady decline for the last few months. I think it was really too late for radiation....But who knows, maybe it is delaying things. We went in last Tuesday for his infusion and talked with his neuro-oncologist about everything that we've been seeing with Matt, and he decided that we're at the point now where we should discontinue treatments...I feel like it's the right decision, even though it breaks my heart knowing that there is nothing else we can do. But I feel like we've done everything. All the supplements, the diet, the chemo, the radiation... Matt has fought hard. He never gave up hope. He kept the faith. He never complained through any of this. Not once did I hea
People always said That time would heal the pain But how can that be When mine still remains? The tears still fall At just the thought of you So I know that what they say Just can't be true As the years go by I miss you so much still  No matter how much time passes I know I always will How are you not here To ease my hurting heart? Never could I have imagined We would ever be apart My world has been shattered A piece of me is gone And all I can do is pray For strength to live on I know that one day soon I will see you again I just have to try to suffer through And make it until then

Why?

Why? Why do I care so much?  Why do I make sure they brush their teeth at night so that they don't get cavities? Why do I spend my own money to buy them clothes, toys and decorate their rooms, among other things?  Why do I do 5,000 loads of laundry a week to make sure they have clothes to wear to school? Why do I make sure they go to church on Sundays so that they'll be raised to know about Jesus? Why do I try to give them chores and responsibilities so that they will turn out to be decent human beings? Why do I read them a bedtime story at night, even when I'm exhausted? Why do I clean up after them constantly and cook for them and try to always have healthy snacks and food on hand? Why do I go to their sports games and practices, just to feel like the odd man out standing there awkwardly with their bio mom? Why do I give 100% of myself and make so many sacrifices for children I didn't birth? Only to be insulted and told hurtful things? To be made to feel like I'm
