This past weekend was long and fun-filled! Friday my husband and I went to a Louisville Bats game. My favorite part was eating a hot dog a nachos!(It was allowed-my "treat" for the week! ). They were both sooo yummy! We had a heat advisory that day-heat index was around 100 degrees! It was HOT and very humid. But we gotta get used to it-summers here are like that!
Saturday my family had a cookout/graduation party for 2 of my cousins. Gotta love hotdogs and potato salad! It was another hot and humid day! But we had lots of fun playing volley ball and cornhole! I love family cookouts!
Sunday we didn't go to church, although I wish we had! (We rarely skip church, but we were exhausted!) So we spent the day cleaning and working on Matt's homework, then did some grocery shopping.
Now it's boring ol' Monday again.... I had to get up early to train some clients, so I think I'm going to take me a nap...I am sleeeeepy! Then I gotta go back to work this evening to train someone else. Then it's the same thing all over again tomorrow!
I wish the sun was out so I could lay out, but it's been cloudy and stormy all morning...
A blog about my life, my thoughts, faith, exercise, healthy eating... and some other random things here and there!

Stupidest Things in the Gym
Since I work at a gym, I see people doing the dumbest things. Sometimes it makes me laugh, and sometimes I just shake my head...but I guess some people just really don't know what they're doing, so I can't really blame them!
I hate the guys that walk around with weight belts on for EVERY exercise-that is absolutely not needed. Or the ones that try to lift super heavy, but are only doing partial reps with HORRIBLE form. Or the women who never lift more than 5 pounds!
But the thing I absolutely cannot stand in the gym are the women who do only two exercises-the inner and outer thigh machine, and some type of abdominal machine. This just drives me CRAZY.
Those are pretty much the 2 most pointless exercises to do. Most women do those exercises because those are the areas they want to shrink or "tone". But actually, those exercises are not doing that at all! The inner and outer thigh machine is NOT going to give you smaller thighs, and you're not burning many calories doing it, either. It's just a waste of time. Most ab machines are the same way-I especially hate the rotary torso machine. It will NOT get rid of your love handles!
Instead of doing those exercises, you are better off doing some intense interval training to blast fat and some basic weight training exercises, such as squats, lunges, and overhead presses. Those exercises will work the core while at the same time burning many more calories than the inner thigh and abdominal machines!

Need A JOB!
So it's Monday....I really hate Mondays-who doesn't??? But it's not because it's the start of the work week, because I don't have a full time job...and my job is not even really like a job to me!
But I hate Mondays because they are SUPER boring.
Matt has school in the mornings, then works 2-10 on Mondays. :( So I'm here all alone ALL day with nothing to do! I had a couple of clients to train this morning, then I have one more this evening. I'm about to take a nap...guess that will pass some time. Already went to pick up a few things at the grocery...then I'll probably read for a few hours....maybe find something to clean(I need to dust-ugh)...then take Asher for a walk when it gets a little cooler...then I guess watch some TV and wait for Matt to get home!
That's why I need another job because I get depressed when I'm here all day by myself sometimes! Well, it's usually just a Monday thing. I don't really have close friends anymore to hang out with....it's hard for me to make new friends. I don't open up to people very easily, and I feel like I don't have things in common with anyone. :( I'm just weird, I guess. Most people are at work during the day anyway!
But I have no clue where I could get a job...I really love personal training, so I want to continue doing that-I guess I could try to find another gym to work at. I need to make more money!! 10 hours a week is just not cuttin' it!! It really sucks... I want another job, but I also want to be selective with the days and times that I work, and I don't know what type of job will let me do that! Sigh...I dunnooooooo

I Hate Vegetables!

Okay, so I talk about how I eat healthy, BUT there is one slight problem with that-I hate vegetables! I always tell my clients that a healthy diet should ALWAYS include lots of veggies....but I can't seem to follow my own advice! :(
I do eat healthy-I stay away from sugar and refined carbs and saturated fat and eat whole wheat products, low fat dairy and lots of fruits...but I never ever eat my vegetables. I don't know why, but they are just disgusting to me!
BUT since I am always trying to be healthier and find ways to eat better, I am going to start trying really hard to eat at least ONE vegetable a day! Even if I have to force it down my throat! We're supposed to have about 4 servings a day, actually, but I don't know if that will ever happen....
But we'll see how it goes. I just want to be as healthy as I can be! So even me, the personal trainer, the one who everyone thinks eats so perfect, has problems with her diet! I'm a normal person like everyone else, I just don't eat as much crap! :) The point is, I have to work on certain things,too--it's a process. If you're trying to eat healthier, just pick one thing to change and work on that goal alone. When that becomes a habit, pick something else.
Don't think you could never eat healthy! 4 years ago, I would've never imagined that I'd be eating the way I do now! I love food, too, just like everyone else(and I have the BIGGEST sweet tooth!), but now I think of food as fuel for my body, and that changes everything.

Forget Swine Flu, THIS is Scarier
I know, it's long! Just read the bold stuff if you want. :)
By: Tom Venuto
Although the swine flu hysteria has settled down a bit, it’s still making headlines, as it was front page news here in the New York City area today. The amount of panic over this public health concern is surprising when you consider how most people continue to do things to themselves every day that are far more likely to be deadly. For example, most people are still eating one specific type of food that has been deemed totally unfit for human consumption. Now THAT’s scary.
Alas, fear-mongering and bad news sell, regardless of the true threat level, so the media has been pummeling us with stories about the flu pandemic (and I couldn’t help noticing that many health experts are now arguing that this is no worse than common strains of flu).
I wonder why the media doesn’t put this kind of effort and attention into more productive types of public health messages, like what to eat and what NOT to eat? And why don’t consumers respond with equal alarm when messages about our food are broadcast?
I find it odd the way people have been reacting to the flu news with fear and panic, even avoiding crowded public places like the gym and donning face masks when going out in public. Then they’ll remove these masks and proceed to smoke cigarettes and inhale food that’s potentially far more dangerous than any flu threat. Most people are literally eating poison every day without giving it a second thought.
Here’s the result: In the US alone, 1,700,000 new cases of diabetes, 233,600 diabetes-related deaths, 600,000 myocardial infarctions and 451,300 coronary heart disease-related deaths every year.
Trans Fatty Acids: The poison in our food supply that most people are STILL eating
Trans fatty acids (TFA’s) come mostly from the industrial partial hydrogenation of vegetable oils, which alters the natural cis configuration of the oils to the trans configuration. Trans fats are not found in nature, with the exception of some ruminant-derived TFA’s which are found in certain dairy products (usually contributing less than 0.5%of total caloric intake).
TFA’s have been studied for decades, but were largely ignored until the past several years. Since 2006, TFA’s have thankfully received a decent amount of publicity when they were in the news regarding new food labelling laws and the banning of their use in restaurants in some states.
New Studies on Trans Fats:
TFA’s are not new news, but there have been new studies published this year on the dangers of TFA’s, two of them just in the last month. If you think swine flu is scary, consider the following facts from the latest research:
Four recent studies indicated 24, 20, 27 and 32% higher risk of myocardial infarction (MI) or CHD death for every 2% energy of TFA consumption isocalorically replacing carbohydrate, SFA, cis monounsaturated fatty acids and cis polyunsaturated fatty acids, respectively.
Even consumption of small amounts of TFA’s (2% of total energy intake) is consistently linked to coronary heart disease.
If heart disease isn’t enough, the research says that TFA’s will:
Increase belly fat (visceral fat) and body fat
Contribute to insulin resistance
Increase risk of type 2 diabetes
Adversely affect circulating lipid levels (increase bad LDL cholesterol)
trigger systemic inflammation
disrupt glucose-insulin homeostasis
cause metabolic dysfunction
Induce endothelial dysfunction
Adversely affect almost every cell in your body, including hepatocytes, adipocytes, macrophages and endothelial cells.
Some experts say there is NO safe level of TFA intake. They’re THAT bad.
If Trans fats are so dangerous, why is their use so widespread?
Nutrition author Udo Erasmus put it this way: “TFA’s are a food manufacturer’s dream: an unspoilable substance that lasts forever.” TFA’s are cheap and for countless food products, they can prolong shelf life, allow easy transport, provide solidity at room temperature, and increase suitability for commercial frying.
Public health messages have been raising awareness, but they haven’t been enough. “TFA’s are bad for you.” Ok, so now what? What you really need are some simple behavior guidelines and a list of foods to eat very infrequently if you eat them at all.
Here’s a good place for you to start.
4 Ways to Avoid Trans Fatty Acids:
1. Read ingredients lists. The primary source of TFA’s is partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. In particular, soybean, sunflower, cottonseed and palm oils are frequently hydrogenated. Your first step then, is to read food labels on any packaged products and look at the ingredients list. If it contains partially hydrogenated oils, it contains TFA’s.
2. Watch for label loopholes. WARNING: Food companies are lying to you on their product labels to make you think their foods are TFA-free. The front of their package may say “ZERO grams of trans fats,” and yet there is hydrogenated oil listed in the ingredients. How could that be? There is a label loophole where the government allows companies to claim zero trans fats if there is less than a half a gram per serving. So the food companies sneakily manipulate their serving sizes until the servings are so small that the TFA content falls below the per serving limit.
3. Eat mostly foods that do not have a label. At the risk of stating the obvious, if you don’t eat anything that comes in a box or package with a label, then you won’t ever consume manmade TFA’s. If your diet consists primarily of fruits, fibrous vegetebles, root vegetables, beans, legumes, brown rice, unprocessed whole grains, nuts, seeds, eggs, fish and lean meats, you’re home free.
4. Avoid foods that contain TFA’s most of the time. TFA’s are commonly found in baked goods (bakery), fried foods and packaged convenience foods, especially:
cookies*
crackers*
biscuits*
pastries*
pies*
doughnuts*
packaged frozen foods (breaded chicken, breaded fish, etc)
corn chips
potato chips
packaged popcorn
some breads
frostings
french fries (fried potatoes)
taco shells
margarine
shortening
some salad dressings
some candies
some processed cheeses

Well, this weekend we went to Kart Kountry to play some mini golf. I was winning up until the last hole, and then I blew it! So my husband beat me AGAIN! I get so mad when I lose to him. But that's most of the time! :(
Next week we might go back to ride some go karts!

Healthy Eating
"Nothing tastes better than skinny feels." -Steven Tyler
I love that quote! If taken in a healthy way, it's a great quote to live by, I think!
I grew up eating really BAD food, as most people do, and had NO idea what I was doing to my body. Through highschool and my first year of high school all I ate was junk food-candy, sodas, chips, fast food....I had NO concept of eating healthy whatsoever.
I remember at one point in high school, when I really wanted 6 pack abs, I decided to start "eating better", and I wrote down everything I ate in a notebook. Well, my idea of eating better was just eating less calories! I still ate the same junk food, but I wasn't taking in very many calories at all. I can remember one of my days having a hotdog, some peanut m&ms and something else?....and I only took in 900 calories! Now that just seems crazy to me. That's what I thought would help me get a 6 pack!
I had no idea how unhealthy that was! Anything under 1200 calories a day is NOT healthy at all. I'm sure I didn't do that for very long-I didn't have an eating disorder or anything, I just didn't know any better! But how many people out there do think that is the way to lose weight? It's because people are never taught how to eat healthy-I sure wasn't.
It wasn't until I took some healthy living and some nutrition classes in college, that I realized I had it all wrong. That is when I made the decision to start eating healthy. I didn't do it to lose weight, because I didn't have any to lose. I just didn't want to continue putting junk into my body. I just wanted to be healthy! So I gradually started changing things-stopped eating fast food and started taking my lunch to school/work, stopped drinking sodas, added in more fruits and veggies, and ate less candy and sweets! It took a while to get to the point where I am now-it was a gradual process.
Now I would never go back to eating the way I used to-I have NO desire to. I like being healthy. I like the way I look. People think I'm weird or something because I choose to eat healthy. Why is that so odd? But whatever-they are the same people always complaining about how fat they are, and asking me what they can do about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, every now and then I have a "treat" (once a week or so), but I wouldn't want to eat that stuff every day. I would feel and look like crap! :) I work TOO hard to look the way I do!
I would much rather have the body that I have than have the temporary pleasure of eating a donut!
It's not that hard to eat healthy, but you can't try to do it all at once. Don't restrict yourself and don't tell yourself you can't have certain food-that is setting yourself up for failure. Just start making small changes in your diet. Add in more healthy foods like whole grains, fruits and veggies, then start cutting back on some of the bad stuff-sugar, fried foods, white bread, saturated fat. Over time you will get to the point where you don't WANT to eat that junk.
Eating healthy is the BEST thing I could've ever done! And now I finally have abs that show!

Summer

I love summer. After months of waiting, it is finally here, and I don't have to complain about the cold!!!
Today is HOT. It's about 90 degrees. It'll get much hotter than this, though, so I gotta get used to it. But I'm not complaining-I'd much rather have this than 20 degrees! I layed out again today, just like I do every day that's sunny. Yeah,I know, I have a lot of free time on my hands!
I went to the library today and checked out 6 books! I'm going to try to read them all in 2 weeks. I read so many books that now when I go to the library I can't remember which books I have and haven't read. I've loved reading since I first learned how. Yup, I'm a bookworm!
Oh my gosh, I want to go a vacation sooooooooooo bad...I can't even think about it. But now with our income not being near what it used to be, it's not going to happen. :( But we're going to New York for my brother-in-law's wedding in July, so that's going to be our "vacation" for the year. Not the same as the beach, but it'll still be nice to get away.
Now if I can just talk my husband into taking me to New York City! We go to NY a couple of times a year, but I've never been to NYC! Maybe someday he'll take me!
